For years, the people of India awaited a person to enter politics who could be non-political in every aspect. The probability of such a thing happening was minimal. It seemed like growing something valuable on an arid land. But, then at the turn of this century, came a man with no political background. Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, a man with the humility of a child, went on to become the President of India.
Born in Rameswaram, Dr. Kalam was a paragon of grit and determination. A scientist by profession, he led some of India's successful missions to outer space including the PSLV and SLV- III projects. But his greatest contribution came the day he took oath to the President's office. A man of his stature becoming the President was the most satisfying moment for all Indians. He was a visionary. He did not belong to any political party. He belonged to India. He was the 'people's' President. As Mr, Rajdeep Sardesai aptly said - "He was not raised by the President's post but he himself raised the Office Of the President".
Dr. Kalam never showed any signs of superiority over others even for a single day during his tenure as India's President. He was humble in the truest sense. This quality comes at a premium these days. This very quality made him a favorite among the masses. From the young to the old, poor to the rich, everyone cherished his presence. His affinity towards children and his infectious smile was extremely heartwarming. This was evident from his visits to many schools and colleges. To inspire young minds and instill in them confidence to lead India's present and the future was his passion.
Dr. Kalam loved to learn and spread knowledge. Even before he left this world , he did what he loved, addressing to the students of IIM ,Shillong. He came with knowledge and passed away in the 'arms' of knowledge. His contribution to India can never be forgotten , as the President,as a scientist and most importantly as a human being. It is very difficult to attach the term 'great' to a person in this day and age. But Dr. Kalam was one of the very few who epitomized greatness. You will be sorely missed Sir. Rest In Peace.
